Golden Apple Awards - Nominate a teacher and show your appreciation and support!

The Golden Apple is a means of selecting and honoring some of our outstanding teachers. One candidate is selected to represent their school and receives a "Golden Apple" as well as gift certificates from local businesses. Each school representative is then eligible to receive a $1000 grant. Grants are awarded to 3 elementary, 2 middle, and 2 high school candidates in Albemarle County, Charlottesville City and CATEC.

Your nomination is anonymous and will not be shared with the teachers. You may nominate any teacher in the school not just your child's current classroom teacher. Nomination forms are available in the office and online at www.betterlivingvirginia.com or www.k12albemarle.org. Past honorees from Murray include Angela Stokes, Alex Davis, and Jeff Myers.

Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award

The Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year grant is awarded annually to recognize outstanding local teachers and the schools from which they teach. Through an in-store nomination and balloting process that will take place through February 28, one outstanding teacher is recognized locally. The winning teacher is recognized on National Teacher’s Day and a $1,000 grant is made payable to the school in their honor. All local winners are encouraged to apply for the State grant which awards a $10,000 grant payable to their school. There is also one National Teacher grant of $25,000 payable to their school. Last year’s local winner was Ann Smith from Walker Elementary (Charlottesville City Schools).

 A nomination form includes:

1) Teacher’s name

2) School name

3) Name of person completing the nomination

4) Reason for nominating the teacher. Include qualities or accomplishments that set this teacher apart from others. Specifically identify special qualities showing that the teacher goes above and beyond the normal expectation.

Nomination forms can be found on the Wal-Mart Foundation website at www.walmartfoundation.org under the “Education” link.
