Do You Have a Spare Computer You're Looking to Put to Good Use?

We recently became friends with a family originally from Congo in Africa. They arrived in the U.S., and Charlottesville, just three months ago after a seven year wait as refugees in Gabon. Their entry into this country was sponsored by the International Rescue Committee, and we are helping to welcome them as some of their first American friends. The family consists of four children, including two ninth graders at Albemarle High School, and their mother.

As they work to deal with a number of challenges (financial, cultural, and language among others), they would like to remain in touch with the rest of their family, which is now scattered across the globe in many countries, including New Zealand, France, Belgium, and other parts of the U.S. To do this the family hopes to rely on email, but to date has had to rely on a very old, very buggy computer. It crashes all the time and does not have any software that would be useful for the high school students (like a word processor).

Do you have an old computer that you're no longer using? Our friends don't need anything special...just a reliable computer with a little bit of software.

      Ideally the computer would:

      - be reliable
      - have Windows XP as the operating system
      - have a word processing program
      - have a dial up modem (for Internet connection)

They have a monitor, but would gladly take an updated one. They do not have a printer.

If you have a computer you'd like to donate, please call Michael or Susan Weiner at 293-7270.

      Thanks.
