Burley to Host College and Career Planning Night
Parents Invited to Learn How to Help their Middle or Elementary School
Student
Parents of middle and elementary school students wondering how to help their
children get into college and the career of their choice will be able to
hear from a number of experts from across the community on College and
Career Planning Night, Wednesday, November 10, from 6:30 to 8:40 p.m. at
Burley Middle School. The event is sponsored by the Burley Middle School
Parent Teacher Organization.
Scheduled presentations include the following:
* “Work Readiness Skills,” Wendy M. Miller, workforce services
representative, Virginia Employment Commission. Parents will learn how to
encourage their child to develop skills such as communication, teamwork, and
leadership, which are essential for success in any career.
* “Financing Education Beyond High School,” Scott E. Miller,
assistant director of financial aid, University of Virginia. This session
will help parents understand basic financial aid guidelines so they will be
better prepared when their child is ready to attend college.
* “Saving for College,” George Payne, CPA, president, A.N.
Culbertson & Company, Inc. In this session, parents will learn about various
college savings plans, and they’ll also hear answers to 10 of the most
frequently asked questions regarding saving for college.
* “The Career Academy – Career Exploration through Enrichment
Opportunities,” Debbie Gannon, Career Academy coordinator, CATEC. The
Career Academy provides students the opportunity to explore various careers
by participating in workshops, seminars, job-shadowing experiences, and
internships. Students can join the Information Technology Academy or the
Health Sciences Academy and participate in enrichment activities organized
to help them explore career options in these fields.
* “Career Pathways: Career Selection by Choice, Not Chance!” Charles
B. Mitchell, director, Central Virginia Tech Prep Consortium, Piedmont
Virginia Community College. Selecting a career is a cooperative effort
involving students, parents, teachers, and counselors. Parents will learn
how to help their child consider a career that blends their values,
interests, and abilities, and helps them achieve personal, educational, and
career goals.
* “Overview of Career Education in Middle and High School,” Eleanor
T. Biasiolli, guidance counselor, Burley Middle School, Yvonne Brown,
director of guidance, Albemarle High School and Cheryl Seay, director of
guidance, Monticello High School. This session will overview the wealth of
career education services provided students in middle and high school.
* “Career Planning: How Parents Can Assist Their Child with this
Process,” Mary Rose Serafini, program manager, Charlottesville Area School
Business Alliance. In addition to introducing parents to career planning and
resources available to help families with the process, this session will
explain how parents can support their child’s career choice.
* The Middle School Years – Planning for College,” Allen Freeman,
gifted resource teacher, Albemarle High School. It’s never too early to
start planning for college. This session will cover what parents need to
know about what colleges expect from students during the middle school
years.
Burley Middle School is located on Rose Hill Drive in Charlottesville. From
either direction on the 250 Bypass, take the Rugby Ave. exit (McIntire
Park). At the intersection (traffic light) of Rugby Ave. and Rose Hill
