College & Career Planning Night!

Burley Middle School is hosting its 2nd annual College & Career Planning Night especially for parents of 4th - 8th grade students this Wednesday, November 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M.  
 
Although college seems a long ways off to parents of middle and elementary school students, there are things you can be doing now to help your child make better decisions and have more options regarding their future.  
 
The following sessions have been scheduled:
1.       "Work Readiness Skills," Wendy M. Miller, Human Resources Technician, Piedmont Virginia Community College.  
Learn how to encourage your child to develop the skills that are essential to succeed in any job and/or career.  These skills include communication, team work, and leadership. 
2.       "Financing Education Beyond High School," Scott E. Miller, Assistant Director, Financial Aid, University of Virginia.  
This session will help parents to understand basic financial aid guidelines so they will be better prepared when their student is ready to attend college.
3.      "Section 529 Savings from the Commonwealth of Virginia," Nicole Douglas, Executive Assistant, Virginia College Savings Plan.
Learn more about the Section 529 Savings Plan offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia.  
4.       "The Career Academy - Career Exploration Through Enrichment Opportunities," Debbie Gannon, Career and Instructional Technology Coordinator, CATEC.  
The Career Academy provides students with the opportunity for career exploration through participation in workshops, seminars, job shadowing experiences and internships. Students can join the Information Technology Academy or the Health Sciences Academy and participate in any of the enrichment activities that have been organized to help them explore different career options.
5.       "CATEC - An Overview," Debbie Gannon, Career and Instructional Technology Coordinator, CATEC.
Learn more about the wonderful opportunities CATEC has for all students to excel in their career, further their education, and enhance their life skills through academic and technical studies that reflect the workforce needs of the community.
6.       "Career Pathways: Career Selection by Choice, Not Chance!" Charles B. Mitchell, Director, Central Virginia Tech Prep Consortium, Piedmont Virginia Community College.  
The selection of a career path is a cooperative effort that involves the student, parent, teachers and counselors. Students should begin thinking about a career path that blends their values, interests and abilities, and leads to the achievement of personal, educational and career goals.
7.      "Overview of Career Education in Middle School," Eleanor T. Biasiolli, M.S.; M.Ed., Guidance Counselor, Burley Middle School, Laurie McDade, M.S.; M.Ed., Guidance Counselor, Burley Middle School.
This session will overview the wealth of career education services provided for students in middle school.
8.      "Overview of Career Education in High School," Yvonne Brown, B.A., M.Ed., Director of Guidance, Albemarle High School and Sandra Garland, B.A., M.Ed., Director of Guidance, Monticello High School. 
This session will overview the wealth of career education services provided for students in high school.
9.       "Be Your Child's Career Coach," Lori Nicolaysen, Career Counselor, University Career Services, University of Virginia, sponsored by CASBA (Charlottesville Area School Business Alliance). 
Parents want to give their children the guidance and support that will help ensure a happy and successful future. This seminar will introduce the process of career planning, resources available to you, and how you can have a role in supporting your child in their career choice.
10.    "Some Things Parents Need to Know about College & Careers - A Student's Perspective," Jessie Groves, Monticello High School Senior. 
 Learn from this Burley alumni what parents can do to help their kids make better college and career decisions.
