Division Seeks Two Parent Council Representatives for Fun, Short-term Committee

As part of its communications plan, Albemarle County Public Schools will complete a division branding/identity project this fall to create a new division logo and motto reflective of the division's new vision, mission, values, and goals. The project will not affect current school site logos/mottos - it is focused at the division level only. The division is seeking two Parent Council representatives to serve on its Identity Project Committee during October and November.

Members of the committee will work with Payne, Ross & Associates to develop a new identity for Albemarle County Public Schools that builds on its strengths, positions it as a forward-thinking and acting entity that continually improves the quality of life in our community. Supported by strong visuals and consistent wording, the identity package is expected to bespeak stability, excellence, innovation, and stability. Committee members' primary purpose will be to react to concepts developed by the firm, to review focus group results of concept testing, and to prepare the recommendation to be considered by the School Board in January 2006.

The Committee will meet four times during October and November. Two meetings will last for one hour. Two meetings will last for 1.5 hours. A fifth meeting is tentatively scheduled but will be the decision to hold the meeting or complete tasks electronically will be the decision of the committee. The total time commitment for members is expected to be 6-7 hours.

The two Parent Council representatives will need to represent different feeder patterns. Ideally, a father's perspective also will be included. Those who are interested are asked to contact Parent Council President Chip Deale at <mailto:chip.deale at cfainstitute.org> chip.deale at cfainstitute.org or 951-5342.

School Board to take Public Comments

on Redistricting Proposal Through October 7

Parents have until October 7th to submit written comments on the redistricting proposal for fall 2006 to the Albemarle County School Board for consideration.

The School Board currently is considering a proposal to redistrict 524 students in the fall of 2006. The School Board expects to adopt a redistricting plan during its October 10th meeting.

Written comments can be submitted by e-mailing to <mailto:SchoolBoard at k12albemarle.org> SchoolBoard at k12albemarle.org or by U.S. Mail addressed to the Albemarle County School Board, 401 McIntire Road, Room 345, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

Redistricting is a term that refers to the revision of the geographical boundaries that create an individual school's attendance boundaries. Redistricting often is caused by enrollment growth, a need to relocate students to balance building capacities where needed or to prevent or correct "split feeder patterns." Split feeder patterns represent situations where capacity issues force an elementary or middle school to send its graduates on to more than one school instead of keeping them together as a class at the next school.

During its September 8th meeting, the School Board approved two changes to the original proposal it received from the superintendent. The two changes were based in part on staff recommendations regarding the most current student enrollment information. The two changes to the proposal increased the number of students to be moved by 45. Community members can view the School Board's redistricting proposal and background information on-line at <http://www.k12albemarle.org/> www.k12albemarle.org.

Families that may be affected by redistricting changes in fall 2006 have received a letter from the school division with information about the redistricting proposal and opportunities to provide public comment before the School Board makes a decision.
