Explaining Parent Council
The Parent Council is a largely unknown entity to most adults - parents and teachers alike - who are connected with the county school system. The 200-word article that follows is one that was written for the Crozet Elementary School newsletter in the hope of raising awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the valuable roles served by the Parent Council. You might wish to adapt this article for your own school - editing it for brevity if necessary and inserting the appropriate name(s) and contact information.

Countywide Council Brings Parents, School Officials Together
Parent leaders from across the school system connect with each other and school officials every month through the Albemarle County Schools Parent Council. Every public school in the county selects a representative to participate in Parent Council. Chip Deale is Crozet's rep, with Lynn Bradley serving as the alternate. Chip also is serving a second year as Council President.
Parent Council's purpose is to promote quality public education through programs directed towards parents, teachers and the public. Council meetings serve as a forum for parents to share ideas, exchange information about school issues, and plan outreach efforts designed to inform and involve parents, teachers and community members.
The organization annually sponsors "Students Make a Difference Day", which features students conducting community service projects throughout the county on a specific date in October.
Parent Council members also serve as an important communications link between the School Division's central office, the School Board, and the schools they represent. Members provide input to the School Division on important initiatives, and take information back to their school about Division successes, challenges and pending changes.
