Parent Guide to Personal Safety for YOUTH (new 02/04/08)

Because of the exceptional popularity of the KidSafe Virginia parent guides, the Governors Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (GOSAP) recently worked to revise, update, and combine the previous parent guides into one guide.  The purpose of the new publication, Prevention Comes First: Parent Guide to Personal Safety for Youth, is to educate parents about some of the potential safety threats children may face and to assist parents in communicating with their children about personal safety.

The topics covered in the guide include: fire safety, internet safety, driving safety, bullying, gangs, inhalant abuse prevention, and underage drinking.

Beginning December 1, 2007, the parent guides will be available at fire and rescue stations and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices throughout the Commonwealth.

To locate your nearest DMV office, visit: http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/utilities/offices.asp.

Copies of the parent guide may also be downloaded from the GOSAP Web site: http://www.gosap.state.va.us/preventioncomesfirst.htm.

Questions may be addressed to Jacklyn Varela,

special assistant to the Secretary of Public Safety at 804.692.568 or

Teachers for Tomorrow (new 02/04/08)

This year long elective course for aspiring teachers is being offered for rising juniors and seniors.

The state of Virginia is looking for a few good future teachers.  Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow is part of a statewide program that is an attempt to address the growing shortage of teachers in our state.  The idea is to get high quality students interested in teaching before they go off to college, so they will want to pursue teaching as a career.

The course introduces students to the field of education through participation in a rigorous curriculum and field experiences.  Students explore teaching through a variety of classroom experiences, independent projects, and by completing a field experience where they observe and teach in a local school.

Benefits that could enhance college readiness include: honors level work, career exploration, real world professional experience and responsibilities, and verbal and written skill development to name a few.

Any rising juniors and seniors who might be interested in becoming teachers should consider taking the class next year.  The class requires a serious commitment.  It will be challenging and require a good deal of work outside of class time, but it is fun and interesting.

An application, 3 recommendations, and short essay are required.  GPA in the range of 2.7 or above is one of the criteria for acceptance into the class.

Please see Mr. Shell in room 142 or 975.9300 x1142 wshell at k12albemarle.org

with any questions.

Look for the Teachers for Tomorrow display at the Electives Fair on February 6th.
