Aerospace Science and Technology (new 03/05/08)


Become a Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholar!

Explore where science, math and technology can take you.

 

Virginia Space Grant Consortium, in partnership with NASA Langley Research 

Center, is pleased to announce the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology 

Scholars program.

 

Open to Virginia high school juniors with an interest in science, technology, 

engineering or mathematics, students will complete exploration themed online 

course work and attend a 6 day residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley 

Research Center in Hampton, Virginia from July 27 to August 1, 2008.  

 

Forty (40) students will be selected for the 2008 session.  As part of the Summer Academy, Scholars will plan a human mission to Mars in the company of science, 

engineering and technology mentors from NASA.  Lodging, meals and transportation costs are covered while at the Academy.

PVCC Engineering Program (new 03/05/08)


PVCC offers you an affordable, two year AS degree in Engineering on a full time or part time basis.  Upon graduation, you can transfer into a 4 year engineering program to complete your Bachelors degree. Better still, you are guaranteed admission into the engineering programs at Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, or Virginia Commonwealth University after you have earned your AS degree in Engineering at PVCC (min. GPA required). 

 

All of the engineering courses at PVCC are transferable to: 

UVA, VT, VCU, and ODU!

 

PVCC DUAL CREDIT COURSES for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009

Courses offered at PVCC NOT at AHS

Fall semester 2008 
EGR 120 = Introduction to Engineering (2 credits/ 4 contact hours = .5 high school credits ie.1 lecture + 3 lab)
This course is designed to introduce students to ideas, concepts and methods universal to all disciplines of engineering.  Engineering design, analysis, and teamwork will be emphasized through a semester long project involving the Lego® Mindstorm NXT Robots.  In addition, this class will also emphasize important skills, including technical documentation, presentation skills, and the use of software-based computational tools for solving engineering problems.
             ▪ 8:15am to 10:05am = Tuesdays and Thursdays in Engineering Lab Room 831 
             ▪ Fall Semester:  August 25 to December 16 (first class = Tuesday, August 26)
             ▪ No classes September 1, September 20/21, November 26 to 29, & December 9
             ▪ Final exam week = Dec. 10 to16

EGR 120 Prerequisites

Writing:  

COMPASS score of 75 to 99 in writing or ENG 3 or

AP English test score of 3 to 5 or SAT I verbal score of 520 

Reading: 

COMPASS score of 77 to 99 in READ or ENG 5 or AP English test score of 3 to 5 or SAT I verbal score of 520

 

Co-requisites*

MTH 164 or 

COMPASS scores of 51 to100 CALG and 30 to 100 TRIG or 

AP Calculus course or 

SAT II Math score of 680 or higher and COMPASS score of 30 to 100 TRIG

 

Spring semester 2009

EGR 115 = Engineering Design (3 credits/ 5 contact hours = .5 high school credits ie 2 lecture + 3 lab) 
This course applies the principles of orthographic projection, multi view drawings, and descriptive geometry.  It introduces a team approach to engineering project management and helps students develop skills in the use of computer aided design and analysis.  Topics include Computer Aided Design (CAD) using Autodesk Inventor, patent application and search, manufacturing requirements, and analysis of product testing, as well as MATLAB software.
             ▪ 8:15am to 10:05am = Tuesdays and Thursdays in Engineering Lab Room 831 
             ▪ Spring Semester:  January 19 to May 12 (first class = Tuesday, January 20)
             ▪ No classes on January 19, March 9 to14, & May 5
             ▪ Final exam week: May 6 to 12

 

EGR 115 Prerequisites*  

EGR 120 with a minimum grade of C and 

Co-requisites

MTH 173 or AP Calculus test score of 3 to 5 

 

* CSC 110 requirement will be waved for students while in high school.  However, the course must be completed by students in the PVCC engineering program and prior to taking EGR 126 or CSC 201.  

CSC 110 is offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

AP EXAM REGISTRATION - REMINDER


Registration for the 2008 AP Exams will continue until March 11. Students must register for the exams in the Guidance Office before school, during lunch and after school. The cost of each exam is $ 84 which must be paid at the time of exam registration and may be paid by cash or check made out to Albemarle High School.

 

2008 AP Exams are administered May 5 to 9 and May 12 to 16, 2008.  All of the morning exams will begin at 7:30am and all of the afternoon exams will begin at 12:30pm. Please note that most of the afternoon exams will end after 3:45pm, therefore, be sure that you have transportation home after the exam.

 


Career Specialist offers Resume Help


 Seniors interested in full time employment after graduation please contact immediately. Ms. Garnett, Career Specialist, room 214, jgarnett2 at k12albemarle.org .  She will help you finalize your resume, register on-line with VEC, provide job interview workshops and notify you of job fairs. 

 


3rd 9 weeks parents conferences


Parent conferences for the 3rd 9 weeks will be TONIGHT Wednesday, March 5th from 4:15pm to 7:15pm.  Progress reports were printed this week on Thursday February 21st and mailed home on Thursday 2/21 and/or Friday 2/22.

Scholarships


The Communication Disorders Foundation of Virginia awards the Henry C. Hecker High Scholarship to a high school student who is hearing impaired, who has a B average, and who is pursing education beyond high school (vocational, college, etc.).  Applications may be download at the CDF website: http://www.cdf-virginia.org/Student Scholarships.html.  Deadline for completed applications to be submitted is before May 1, 2008.

 

The John Marr Educational Fund Scholarship is open to all former Lane League Babe Ruth baseball players. This scholarship provides $ 2,000 annually for all four college years at an accredited institution.  The criteria for selection are academic achievement, citizenship, and financial need.  The deadline to submit an application is before April 15, 2008.

 

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2008 awards. 

The Barron Prize honors young people ages 8 to 18 who have made a significant 

positive difference to people and our planet. Each year, ten national winners 

each receive $2,000 to support their service work or higher education.

The Brandon Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund is offering $1,000 scholarship to an area senior who is active in their church and has at least a 2.5 GPA.

The Music Resource Center is offering 2 $25,000 scholarships to a junior or 

senior who are current MRC members.  Financial need, 2.75 GPA and clean

The Flynn Education Foundation is offering scholarships to seniors who will be 

attending college in Virginia, West Virginia or North Carolina and who are of 

Christian faith.  Recommendations from a teacher and a minister are required.

The Virginia ESL Supervisors' Association is proud to be able to offer seven 

scholarships of $1,500 each to LEP students who are planning to continue their 

studies at an institution of higher learning.  Students must have a GPA of at 

least 3.0 and have been in an ESL class in high school.  Deadline: April 24th.

 

The New Life Community Development Corporation College Scholarship is offering 

awards ranging from $500 to $2,000.  The application consists of a 250 to 300 word essay on Why Attending College is Important to Me, a list of personal contributions to the community, and proof of VA residency.  Deadline:  April 4.

 

The Allen Law Firm Scholarship is now available.  15 $1,500 scholarships will be 

awarded to seniors across Central Virginia.  All seniors are asked to apply; 

however, it is designed to particularly recognize students, who despite 

obstacles or special challenges have achieved high standards.  2 recommendations are required as well as an essay.  Deadline: April 1st.

 

The VA Credit Union is offering 25 $2,500 scholarships to deserving seniors.  

You must be a member of the VA credit union (not the UVA credit union) to be 

eligible.  Applications are in guidance.  Deadline: March 31st.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood of VA is offering a $1,000 scholarship to senior women who 

will be attending college in VA Academic achievement; need, activities, goals,

The Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District is offering a $2,000 

scholarship to seniors in our area who have an interest in conservation.  

Deadline: must be received by March 7th.

 

St. Pauls Scholarship for students who will be attending PVCC or another 2-year 

vocational institution.  This scholarship can pay full tuition up to 2 years and 

is for WAHS students.  Applications are in guidance. Deadline:  March 23rd.

 

Charlottesville+Albemarle Legal Staff Assoc. is offering 2 scholarships: the 

CALSA award is $500 and is for local students.  The VALS scholarship is in the 

amount of $1,500 and is a statewide competition.  Applications are in guidance.  

Deadline: March 24th.

 

PVCC is seeking applicants for scholarships being offered through a grant from 

the National Science Foundation. The scholarships are available to full time 

students enrolled in the associate in science degrees of engineering, computer 

science and science who meet certain qualifications.

The Minor Preston Educational Fund is hosting a scholarship worth $1,000-$2,500 

for seniors who are bright and involved in their school and who are financially 

needy.  Applications can be found in the Counseling Office.  Deadline: March 

15th.

 

The Armenian Education Center Scholarship is available to 9th to12th graders who 

would like to write an essay comparing and contrasting the Armenian Genocide 

with the Jewish Holocaust.  Deadline:  April 1st 

 

The United Auto Workers and the VA State Community Action Program are sponsoring an essay contest for seniors attending school in VA.  Brochures are in guidance.  Award is $1,200. Deadline is March 15th.

 

The Widow Son's Lodge No. 60 in Charlottesville is hosting a $2,000 scholarship 

for seniors who exhibit financial need, academic achievement, extra curricular, 

work experience, and Masonic affiliation to members.  Deadline: March 15th.

 

The Charlottesville Track Club is offering $1,000 scholarships to 4 male and 4 

female athletes. The award is based on need, personal recs, academics, and 

extracurricular, not on athletic achievement.  Find applications at

The Commonwealth Scholars Program = Students who complete a set of core 

requirements (4 English classes, 3 Math (Alg 1, Alg 2, Geom), 3 Lab Sciences 

(Bio, Chem, Physics), 3.5 History (US History, W. History, US Govt, W. 

Geography), 1 Fine Art or Technical course, and 2 years in a Foreign Language.  

Financial aid monies can be awarded depending on need.  Award will be automatic 

upon graduation.

 

The Micron Technology Foundation is offering scholarships to seniors who are 

interested in majoring in engineering, computer science, physics, chemistry, or 

material science.  Students must have a combined score of at least 1350 

(Reading/Math) and an unweighted GPA of at least a 3.5.  Students must have also demonstrated leadership abilities.  Applications can be found at

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Scholarship Award is for seniors who have lost a parent to breast cancer.  Go online to apply at www.komen.org/grants

The Frank A. Kessler Foundation is offering scholarships to seniors who excel in 

academics, testing, extracurricular activities and employment experiences.

Students interested in going to PVCC, Express Car Wash has a deal for you!  If 

you qualify, you can be hired as a full time employee and they will pay your 

entire tuition and any fees for one semester!  Contact Brian Harris, the General

SunTrust Off To College Scholarship Sweepstakes offers $1000 scholarships for 

high school seniors.  Eligibility is not based on GPA or financial need.  Apply

The Schubmehl+Prein Prize for Best Essay on the Social Impact of Computing can
