The Week At A Glance:

Monday 9/3: NO SCHOOL: What is Labor Day? Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The very first Labor Day was celebrated in the U.S. on September 5, 1882.

Announcements:

THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING: Here's something new for the start of school! The Red Hill Library is having a Back-To-School Book Fair!
It's a chance to stock up on some wonderful books that will get your child excited about reading right from the start!
Book Fair dates are: Monday, September 17th through Friday, September 21st
The Book Fair will also be open during Back-To-School Night on September 20th.
We need lots of volunteers to make this Book Fair a success. Please contact Mrs. Ackroyd today to help out (293-5332 or email: jackroyd at k12albemarle.org).
You'll get to spend time helping students and looking at books. What more could you ask for?

BOOK BASKET: When you clear off your shelf to make room for your new books, think about donating your old books to the Red Hill Book Basket Collection. This is our third year of participation in this program, which helps to put books in the hands of children in our area who might not otherwise have books of their own. Look for the basket in the school lobby, and drop off your gently used books any time!

CAN YOU HELP?: A Chairperson is needed to collect and organize community donations to the very popular Raffle, which takes place during the annual October Carnival. Please contact PTO President Melissa Conley-Zimmerman if you can help. melissa.conley at ahom.com or 971-3517.

                                                                                                 -----------------------------------

KID PAN ALLEY IS COMING TO RED HILL!!! What is it? This program is sponsored by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Two artists in residence, Paul Reisler and local entertainer Terri Allard will meet with all first through fifth grade classes the week of September 17 helping each class write and perform one special song.

How'd this come to Red Hill? At the close of last year, Terri Allard contacted us with information about this opportunity and instructions on how to apply for a grant for funding. With a bit of scrambling, fingers crossed, and help from Ms. Allard we submitted the application. Later in the summer we received word that we'd been awarded the grant and the dates for the residency. Performances:At the end of the week of Sept. 17th students will give two performances, one will be the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 21 and the other will be that same evening at 7:00 p.m. for parents and families.

Be on the look out for more information about Kid Pan Alley, including release forms allowing your children to participate and a more specific schedule for the performances. Got questions? Please call the office at 293 - 5332.

                                                                                                ----------------------------------------

BUSY WEEK:

This will be a very busy week. The dates for most of these events were not within our control and as happens all too often, everything seemed to fall in the same week.

POWER DAYS:

Power Days will be held about once every two months on the second Wednesday. The students are on a different schedule that allows for an entire morning of uninterrupted classroom instruction. Then, after lunches are finished at about 12:15, students participate in a variety of enriching activities organized, planned and supervised by our Essentials teachers and teaching assistants. While students and those staff are involved in these learning activities, classroom teachers and other support staff are involved in staff development training workshops that focus on enhancing instructional strategies that have a direct impact on each child's school success. So, on Power Days, EVERYONE is learning, having fun, and enjoying the occasional change of pace. Come on out and lend us a hand, we can always use volunteers to help staff with supervision or you can share a special talent! Give Mr. Stow a call if you are interested or have questions.

EXPLORER DAYS:

This year we'll hold Explorer Days on the second Wednesdays that we are not having Power Days. Explorer Days are culminating activities that students participate in within multi age groups that focus on using and deepening their understanding of non fiction literature. Each class uses the National Geographic kids magazine called the National Geographic Explorer. When we meet on Explorer Days, everyone gathers for an opening assembly first thing in the morning. Then we break into "Explorer Groups". Explorer Groups are led by every adult staff member in the building. The groups are made up of kids from pre school through fifth grade and will remain together with the same staff group leader for their entire time at Red Hill. These groups develop deeper understandings and enjoyment of non fiction literature and have the opportunity of developing very special relationships that grow as they mature as Red Hill students.

SCHOOL POOL:

SchoolPool is a program for parents who are interested in sharing rides to and from the same school - on a daily basis, occasionally or in an emergency. When you choose to participate in the SchoolPool program you're helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality, and Red Hill has signed up!

When you register, the information is entered into the RideShare database where it is compared against information submitted by other parents at that school.

Parents then receive through the mail a "match list" of other parents who live in the same neighborhood or within a convenient distance and who have similar schedules. The parents then contact each other and make mutually agreeable rideshare arrangements.

You can obtain more information about the SchoolPool program at the following website:

http://www.rideshareinfo.org/schoolPool.asp

Look for the registration table at Back To School Night on 9/20.
