POWER DAY HELP NEEDED: Power Day is held once every two months. Classroom teachers are involved in an extended staff development session while support staff, teaching assistants, and volunteers provide enrichment activities for the kids. This year, teachers are developing strategies to build vocabulary knowledge during their work on Power Days.
Our first Power Day is Wednesday, 10/8.
The student enrichment activities will focus on the OLYMPICS. We need parent volunteers to assist and help with student management. If you are available from 12:00 - 2:30, please email Mr. Stow at astow at k12albmarle.org or call at 293 - 5332.

WHAT IS YOM KIPPUR? Yom Kippur, which in 2008 begins at sundown Oct. 8, and lasts until sundown Oct. 9, is one of the most serious Jewish holidays. Jews who do not regularly observe other holidays often make an exception for Yom Kippur. This is judgment day. Many Jews practice repentance, say prayers, and give charity to obtain God's forgiveness for any sins made in the past year. Yom Kippur is the culmination of a process that began a month earlier. It follows Rosh Hashanah and the New Year's activities. (Source: Factmonster.com)

FOR STUDENT ATHLETES AND PARENTS: Hi parents and players,
I am conducting a research study looking at potential risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL, a ligament in the knee) injuries. I am trying to determine with this study why female athletes are at a 3-4 times greater risk for this type of injury compared to male athletes. My study is looking at a running task in the motion analysis lab over in Fontaine Research Park. The equipment used for the testing is very high tech and will create a 3 dimensional model of the participant while he/she is running. Each session
lasts about 1 hour and at the completion of the session the participant will receive a $10 gift card to Target. In order to qualify for this study he/she must be physically active in sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse or volleyball.
Secondly, participants may not have had an injury to the lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle or foot) in the last 6 months that limited their participation from sports or have a history of surgery to the lower extremity. I am currently looking to include youth and teenage (8 and older) males and females in this study. This study is ongoing until completion and available time slots are filled. Appointments are very flexible including late afternoon/evening and weekend testing.
If you are interested in having your child participate or have any further questions please contact me either by email katejackson at virginia.edu or phone (434) 284-1838.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Kate Jackson, MEd, ATC Sports Medicine Doctoral Student
