From LTR coach Andrea:
Hello again RRC, particularly Advanced rowers,
PLEASE HELP! We need one more coxswain for this evening's LTR session
(Monday, 6/18)! 6-8pm, though you can arrive by 6:15 if need be, since we'll start
with a circuit warm-up. Please email me (arc7b at virginia.edu) or call
(703-967-9820(c) or 434-924-2129(w)) ASAP if you can do it!
We've got a lot of strong, enthusiastic rowers in both of our sessions this
month. Many are already anxious to move on to the Novice program, so I really
want to keep their excitement going--but I need your help to do it!
We're now in 8's and will be for the rest of June, so we need 2 coxswains per
session. Check out the calendar at the boathouse for openings. (We're good
to go for this week, except needing 1 more tonight, and 1 Saturday morning--to
which you can come straight from your Advanced practice.)
Advanced rowers: coxing LTR is not a volunteer option. It is REQUIRED as part
of the sweep rowing program. You must cox at least twice each season as part
of your participation in sweep.
It is essential to the future of our club that we all welcome our LTRers and
help make their LTR as fun and valuable as possible, so everyone please do
your part. Don't wait and hope that other rowers will fill the slots.
Common excuses (though why would you ever not want to cox such a fun
group?!)...
• For those of you who are nervous about first-time coxing, I
promise we'll be absolutely appreciative, and that you'll have a rewarding,
fun experience. We don't move very fast yet, and I'll be right there to help if
you're new to coxing. We just need calm, positive coxing with a little guidance
as we get used to boat feel and proper rowing terminology.
• PLUG!... I also run the COXSWAIN CLINICS, of which the second (&
likely last this summer) is coming THIS SUNDAY 6/24 4-5pm at the boathouse.
But you don't have to wait for the clinic to be ready to cox: I'll help you at
practice, and what better way to learn than to get in the driver's seat and
try it?!?
• For those who are worried you're too big--maybe some of you guys--if
us ladies and our "rower booties" can do it, you can too... the feeling will
come back to your legs eventually... ha! :) (Okay, and if you're really
legitimately worried, please next month be sure to sign up for your share of barge
practices... which likely will only be the first week of July.)
Once again, please get in touch with me ASAP if you can cox tonight. Sorry
to keep on you guys with the coxing reminders, but it's a volunteer-run club,
so we all need to participate to make it work! I promise we'll make it worth
your while!
Thanks!
Andrea
