Thursday 14 February

To RRC Scullers - current or prospective:

In recent months, I have been working with Tom Jones (RRC), Tom
McIntosh (VRA), and Kevin Sauer (UVA) to develop a plan to provide
additional storage for private single sculls at the boathouse. These
folks have been great to work with, and we have a plan roughed out.

I am writing to share the plan, and to ask you to respond -- in
private e mail to me -- if you are interested in storing a single in
this new set-up.

How this would work: We have been maxed out on storage space for a
while, but Kevin came up with a great insight that is the basis for
change: in summer RRC has 4 eights in the RRC sweep bay, but for the
rest of the year, we only have 2 there, as the other 2 migrate over
to the Virginia side of the house. So we have untapped inside
storage from late August to late May.

So here is the plan:

-- in summertime only, 6 to 8 additional private single sculls would
get stored on the boathouse property - outside - on temporary steel
racks. Likely location: on lawn just below the boat house (ie on the
water side) and to the left as you head down the hill. There would
be no cover and no fence around these boats, so damage is possible.
Boat owners would likely want insurance. UVA, VRA, and RRC would not
be liable for any damage.

--as the collegiate rowing season starts up in late August, the 2
eights move over to the Virginia side of the house and at least 6
singles move from the outside rack into the RRC sweep bay (there may
not be room for all 8 singles there). We would need to build some
temporary racks for that purpose (since the racks for the eights
would need some supplementing for the shorter singles).

--the 6-8 singles would be able to stay inside until late-May of the
following year. No singles would remain outside. The outside steel
racks would come down.

--let's call this "combination storage" since it is inside/outside.
These rowers would have full access to their boats and the water just
like the current renters do.

--the rules for combination storage - a minimum of 30 rows/year (vs
40 for inside). Rent to VRA around $300 annually (vs $400 for
inside). RRC membership required.

--RRC would maintain two waiting lists for rack space - one for
inside and one for combination. The same person could be on both
lists simultaneously. Someone in combination storage can stay on the
waitlist for inside storage.

So that is an outline of the plan. Again I thank Kevin and the VRA
for their input and efforts to craft this method to increase
community access to rowing.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN COMBINATION STORAGE, please send a private e
mail to me directly - jackbrown at virginia.edu - soon. I am not asking
for commitments; I am not building a waiting list now. I am just
trying to see how much interest is out there for this option.

If the interest seems insufficient, we won't go ahead. But if I get
a lot of responses, we will firm up the plans and make another
announcement to the RRC list within a month.

Thanks,

Jack Brown
