To RRC Scullers seeking rack space:

I am very pleased to tell you that the VRA board approved the plan to
create combination storage - a plan I outlined in a message to this
list on February 14.

In brief: six single sculls will get stored on an outside steel rack
from late May to late August (roughly). The rest of the year those
boats will come into the boathouse and get stored on racks inside the
RRC sweep bay. The interior racks that I anticipate we will use are
either 5 feet or 7 feet 2 inches feet off the floor. We will need to
make/install additional temporary wooden racks for the singles (these
temporary racks will come out in summer when the eights go back into
these spaces).

I am now making up the list of those interested in this new
space/rental option. Please reply to me ASAP if you wish to rent a
combination space.

Other points:

--annual rent is set at $250 to the VRA.
--annual minimum rows required = 30.
--membership in RRC also required.
--renters in combination storage will have access to their boats and
to the water year round.
--RRC will now maintain two waiting list for storage: one for inside
storage, one for combination storage. The same person can be on
either or both lists simultaneously.

--you must specify which list(s) you want to be on. In private e
mail to me, please send me your name, mailing address, e mail
address, and phone numbers.

--scullers in combination storage need to volunteer to help make the
temporary wooden racks, to install them in late August, and to take
them down in late May.

--scullers seeking combination storage will be able to begin (ie
bring their boats) in late May 2008 when we set up the outside steel
rack. The full rent ($250) will be due; VRA will invoice you
directly.

--the outside racks are currently used by UVA -- in the location that
VRA plans for combination storage. So rowers seeking combination
storage should go inspect the racks (inside and out) to assure
themselves that this option will, in fact, meet their needs.

--rowers in combination storage are reminded that no liability for
damage, loss, or theft will attach to UVA, VRA, or RRC. You are
urged to take out insurance on your boat. Be sure to understand
precisely what the policy will cover.

--the current rules for owners of private sculls also apply to those
in combination storage. Please see the attachment.

--I have not yet worked out the details on where renters in
combination storage will keep their oars. For now, assume your oars
will stay with your boat.

--I cannot say that the VRA will continue this combination storage
option forever. Stuff happens. But the VRA board and Kevin Sauer of
UVA anticipate that will work out well for all involved. If the
renters in combination storage approach also take this view, it can
continue indefinitely.

Once I have the responses to this message, I will get back to those
people directly (viz - I will not be writing via the RRC list-serve).
Feel free to call me if you have questions - 962 9790.

My thanks to Tom McIntosh at VRA and to Kevin Sauer for making it
possible to extend rowing access to more in the community. Their
support is making this happen. I will be meeting with all in
combination storage to ensure your familiarity with the normal rules
and practices of rowing on the Rivanna.
