15 Albemarle County High School Students Named Finalists in Competitive
National Merit Scholarship Program
(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) - Fifteen Albemarle County Public Schools
students have been named finalists in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship
Program and are in competition for Merit Scholarship awards. High school
students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) which serves an
the initial screen of about 1.3 million entrants each year. Albemarle
County's 15 students are among 15,000 across the country advancing to the
finalist stage of the academic competition.
Albemarle County high school students named 2006 National Merit Scholarship
Program finalists include:

The 51st Annual National Merit Scholarship Program will award scholarships
worth $33 million this spring. Approximately half of the finalists will be
selected as Merit Scholarship winners and assume the prestigious Merit
Scholar title.
To advance from being a semifinalist to a finalist, students must have an
outstanding academic record throughout high school, be recommended by the
school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier
qualifying test performance. The semifinalist and a school official must
submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes a student essay
and information about the student's participation and leadership in school
and community activities. All winners of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen
from the finalist group based on their abilities, skills and
accomplishments.
Three types of Merit Scholarship awards will be offered in 2006. Every
finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships. In
addition, 300 corporations and business organizations will underwrite about
1,100 corporate-sponsored scholarships for finalists who meet their
specified criteria. About 200 colleges and universities are expected to
finance about 4,600 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for finalists
who will attend the sponsor institution.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will name Merit Scholarship
winners for 2006 in a series of announcements through July.
