(ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia) - Burley Middle School will host its first Teen
Health Night Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This event is for teens in
grades 6-10 and their parents. The event features presentations on
emotional and physical health topics, snack taste tests, opportunities to
try activities like aerobics or ballroom dancing, and more. Burley is
located at 901 Rose Hill Drive in Charlottesville.

The Teen Health Fair is free and open to all students in grades 6-10, their
parents and friends in the region. Participants will have a variety of
activities and presentations to choose from with some specifically geared
for students or parents and others designed for families to attend together.

Event highlights include the following activities:

* Gait Analysis plus How To Safely Start A Lifelong Training Program -
Mark Lorenzoni, owner of Ragged Mountain Running Shop, will help
participants understand their gait so they can be properly fitted with the
correct footwear. These changes can dramatically improve performance, reduce
the chance of injury and prevent painful conditions in the foot and leg.
This is especially important for teens whose joints are still under
development.

 * Teen Savvy Snacks - Katharine Bigelow, a registered dietitian with
Martha Jefferson Hospital, will help parents understand their teen's
nutrition needs. Parents will also learn more about the challenges they may
face in getting teens to eat properly, and how to foster a healthy
relationship with food. She will share ideas for creative, tasty and
nutritious snacks.

 * Substance Abuse in Early Teens: What to Look For and What To Do -
Dwight McCall, Ph.D., L.P.C., Manager of Child & Adolescent Outpatient
Services for Region Ten CSB, will provide a summary of what current research
shows the signs of substance abuse to be - in terms of behaviors that
parents are better than anyone else to identify. He will also provide a
brief summary of what research and Region Ten's experience with
substance-abusing teens have shown to be most effective in terms of
intervening on substance abuse, both to prevent teens from becoming abusers
and to help them move back to a drug-free life once they start.

 * The Unique Health Needs Of The Middle And High School Student:
Getting The Most Out Of Your Health Care Visit - Dyan Aretakis, RN, FNP/MSN,
Director of the UVA Teen Health Center, will present on this timely topic.
Teens need a grown-up version of the "well child visit" to address
everything from A (acne) to Z (zany behaviors). Special emphasis will be
placed on what are "risk behaviors" and how we screen for them. Based on
the guidelines of the Society of Adolescent Medicine and the American
Medical Association, this discussion will cover all the assessments, tests,
and anticipatory guidance that should occur at an adolescent health care
visit. Dyan will also discuss Virginia laws that relate to when an
adolescent can consent to their own health care services.

 * Navigating the Perfect Storm, aka, Adolescence - Mary A. Sullivan,
M.Ed., with the UVA Teen Health Center, will talk about the developmental
stage of adolescence which presents challenges for kids and their parents.
Knowing what is normal, developmentally, can help ease the way through this
significant transition. Our children's need for independence combined with
our need to keep them safe creates a difficult, but necessary tension.

 * Teens and Sleep - Lori Borish, MSN, CNS, CNP, with the UVA Sleep
Disorders Center, will provide an overview of the basics of sleep, teen
issues resulting in insufficient sleep and teen and family strategies to
ensure that teens get the sleep they need. In addition, several sleep
technologists will be available to work directly with students and have the
student take a Sleep I.Q. test developed especially for teens. There will
also be handouts for both students and parents.

 * Prevention of Knee and Ankle Injuries - Terry Grindstaff, PT, ATC,
CSCS, with the UVA Sports Medicine Department, will focus on methods of
preventing injuries of the knee and ankle. The audience will understand
common exercise programs and proper technique at the end of this session.

 * How Do I Know If My Teen Needs Therapy? - Joe Allen, Ph.D., a UVA
Professor of Psychology, and his wife Claudia Allen, Ph.D., a licensed
clinical psychologist, will present this session. Parents assist their
children with challenges every day, from social and academic issues to
weathering grief, divorce and other life complications. As a parent, it can
be very hard to know when your own efforts to help your child are enough.
This seminar will focus upon how to tell if your child needs or would
benefit from psychotherapy, and, if so, how to connect with the right
therapist. They will also discuss services other than psychotherapy that
can benefit adolescents (and parents) in need of some extra help.

 * Dating and Sexual Violence Among Teens - Leslie Kirkpatrick, BA,
M.Ed. in Clinical and School Psychology with the Sexual Assault Resource
Agency (SARA), and Maria Thomas, MS in Rehabilitation Counseling, Certified
Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) with the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE),
will jointly present this topic. Thomas will present on the dynamics of
dating violence in teen relationships. This session will help teens know
and recognize that Sexual Violence and Dating Violence are real and can
happen to them. Thomas and Kirkpatrick will enlighten youth and let them
know that they have power in accepting what behaviors they want in a dating
partner and do not have to accept anything less. Kilpatrick will also cover
sexual assault and sexual harassment in schools, on-line, and in teen
relationships. Together they will focus on forming healthy relationships
and preventing unhealthy dynamics in a teen culture.

 * Acne: Truths and Myths - Brett D. Krasner, M.D., a Board Certified
Dermatologist with Family Dermatology of Albemarle, will inform parents and
teens about the myths surrounding acne, the true cause of acne, and current
treatments for acne.

In addition to the above presentations, Dr. Doug Cox, from the Cox Clinic of
Chiropractic, will speak on preventing backpack injuries. There will be two
presentations from the Health Department (one for parents and one for teens)
that will deal with teen sexual health issues. There also will be
presentations about preventing bullying, understanding food nutrition labels
and understanding the dangers associated with tattooing.

The Health Fair also will provide information on many programs and resources
for both teens and their parents. There will be samples from Smoothie King,
Giant Foods and Rebecca's. Families can have dinner at the event and then
work off the calories at one of the active sessions: athletic training, Tae
Kwondo or ballroom dancing. Participants also can learn proper weightlifting
techniques or try to win a prize at some of the fun, active games. Massage
therapists from the American Sprit Institute of Esthetics and Massage
Therapy will be on hand and door prizes will be up for grabs from Blue Ridge
Outdoors Magazine, presenters and other health-oriented businesses in the
area.
