School Board holds capital improvement program work session

The Albemarle County School Board is meeting this Wednesday for a special
work session on the capital improvements program (CIP). One of the major
issues to be discussed has to do with school capacity in the Crozet growth
area. Crozet Elementary has been at or over capacity since 2002 and the
recently expanded Henley Middle School is projected to exceed capacity by
2011. On the table is a revised recommendation from staff to add on to
Crozet Elementary to increase its capacity from 342 to 608 students. Spot
redistricting and an addition at Brownsville have also been raised by the
School Board as an alternative way to alleviate overcrowding at Crozet.

In the charts linked below, you can see the enrollment trends and how the
annual 5-year projections compare to actual enrollment at both of these
schools.

While public comment will not be taken at Wednesday's meeting, you can
review the board packet and send me feedback anytime.

At the last School Board meeting, members asked for additional information
in advance of this meeting. In the packet, you will find staff's answers to
the following questions [Note: Here I have reworded them slightly for
clarity]:

1.	Are the next school site land purchases scheduled soon enough?

2.	What redistricting possibilities are available to reduce the student
enrollment at Henley Middle School? [Options for Murray & Meriwether are
discussed]

3.	What program/space changes could be implemented across the division
to increase building capacity?

4.	What are the revised capacities of the schools with action points
and a maximum capacity for the buildings with mobile units?

5.	What is the cost savings for building a new elementary school next
year versus later?

6.	How much more does it cost to complete renovations first, and then
add capacity later?

7.	What are the ramifications of building the Brownsville Addition
before an addition at Crozet Elementary?

8.	Give a brief explanation of the Southern Feeder Pattern Additions
for Red Hill and Scottsville?
