Burley to Host College and Career Planning Night

Parents Invited to Learn How to Help their Middle and Elementary School
Student

Parents of middle and elementary school students wondering how to
help their children get into college and the career of their choice will be
able to hear from a number of experts from across the community on College
and Career Planning Night, Thursday, January 18, from 6:30 to 8:40 p.m. at
Burley Middle School located on Rose Hill Drive in Charlottesville. This
evening will give parents the opportunity to better understand financial aid
and the Virginia 529 Savings Plan program. Parents can also learn about the
wide variety of college and career planning services provided through the
Albemarle County school system. Finally, parents can learn about how to
help their children set goals and learn the skills to be a valuable worker
both in school and beyond. These sessions will be lead by highly qualified
individuals from the Virginia Savings Plan, Albemarle County Schools, UVa,
CATEC and PVCC.

The event is sponsored by the Burley Middle School Parent Teacher
Organization. This Program is directed toward the parents of students in
4th - 8th grade. Along with parents from the county elementary and middle
schools, parents from the city schools, surrounding county schools and
private schools are encouraged to attend.

Scheduled presentations include the following:

* "Financing Education Beyond High School," Scott E. Miller,
assistant director of financial aid, University of Virginia. This session
will help parents understand basic financial aid guidelines so they will be
better prepared when their child is ready to attend college.

* "Career Pathways: Career Selection by Choice, Not Chance!" Charles
B. Mitchell, director, Central Virginia Tech Prep Consortium, Piedmont
Virginia Community College. Selecting a career is a cooperative effort
involving students, parents, teachers, and counselors. Parents will learn
how to help their child consider a career that blends their values,
interests, and abilities, and helps them achieve personal, educational, and
career goals.

* "Overview of Career Education in Middle School," Eleanor T.
Biasiolli, guidance counselor, Burley Middle School. This session will
overview the wealth of career education services provided students in middle
school.

* "Overview of Career Education in High School," Sandra Garland,
director of guidance, Monticello High School and Yvonne Brown, director of
guidance, Albemarle High School. This session will overview the wealth of
career education services provided students in high school.

* "Career Planning: How Parents Can Assist Their Child with this
Process," Mary Rose Serafini, program manager, Charlottesville Area School
Business Alliance. In addition to introducing parents to career planning and
resources available to help families with the process, this session will
explain how parents can support their child's career choice.
