THE BUDGET: WE NEED YOUR VOICE TO BE HEARD….AGAIN!!!!
Thank you to all of the folks who emailed the School Board. Stone-Robinson was heard from loudly and clearly!

Did you know that to make up for the budget shortfall, some of the things they are considering include:

- larger class sizes
- redistricting the middle schools (those slated for Burley could be redistricted to Walton, for example)
- make families pay to have your child ride a bus to school!
- fewer resources for intervention programs

….and that’s just to name a few.

It is hard to keep straight exactly what’s happening with the budget and it can certainly be very confusing. One thing that should be understood is what is at stake. Understand that the school gets the biggest chunk of revenue from our local tax rates. Last year, people voted for the tax rate to be .68 cents. As a result, we are facing drastic budget challenges to our school system. For every 1 cent increase in the tax rate, the school system gets roughly $800,000!! Something to think about the next time the tax rate is discussed.

There will be an important Board of Supervisors meeting on Wednesday, February 20th at 3:30 P.M. At that meeting, they will set the ceiling for the tax rate. After that day, the tax rate can be lowered, but it can not be raised. Several Stone-Robinson parents are planning to talk to the Board to voice our concerns. The presence of concerned parents means a lot to the board. Please try to attend if at all possible. And, as mentioned above, think about the impact of tax rates the next time you are asked to vote for one.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART IS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH 2:30 – 4:30
Don’t forget, this is for 3rd-5th graders only because we have so many jumpers each year that we can only handle half the school and the older children have more endurance and stronger jumping skills. Please know that we could use some volunteers to help donate snacks, prepare the food and deliver it to the kids (who can’t stop jumping)..we offer fruit and drinks to keep their energy up. If you’d like to help out, you can call 296-3754 ext 160 and talk to Mrs. Reardon. They’ll be sure to put you to good use!

SPECIAL EDITION SKATE NIGHT FEB. 15th 6:30 P.M. in the gym

Skate night might prove to be a little brighter on Feb. 15th by a few song and dance routines. Because there were so many students who wanted to sing and/or dance songs from High School Musical or Hannah Montana, we gave them the option to perform at the next Skate Night. So bring your skates and your friends and enjoy a great night of music too! We should also extend a huge thanks to Cathy Jolly and Kalya Campbell and all the other parents that have helped make Skate Night a huge success!

****If you are one of the students who auditioned to be in the talent show and are planning on doing a dance routine at Skate Night, please contact Sasha Noble at Snoble20268 at msn.com by Wednesday, February 13th. We need to make sure we have the sound equipment and space you need.

THE SRE TALENT SHOW IS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd 6:30
We will need volunteers to help that evening with checking students in, managing the flow of acts onto the stage, etc. Contact either Cathy Clemons at CandBClemons at aol.com, or Sasha Noble at Snoble20268 at com if you can help out. It’s going to be a night to remember!

TESTING DATES:
2nd Grade CoGAT: Feb. 19, 20, 21
5th Grade Writing: March 4th, 6th

Both of these tests will be given in the morning. Please avoid scheduling any appointments that would result in your child being absent for these assessments. Rescheduling testing is very difficult. Thank you for your help.

BURLEY EXPO NIGHT IS THURSDAY, FEB. 21st 5-8 PM
February 21st is Burley Expo Night, from 5p-8p, and it is a great opportunity to check out your child’s middle school and see its students and teachers in action. Among other activities, there will be meetings about 6th grade placement. Not to mention, you can have a family dinner (spaghetti) without having to cook! There will be a silent auction, information booths, a bake sale, entertainment and more. The entertainment starts at 7:00 P.M.

ENRICHMENT TEACHERS NEEDED!
Have a skill, or hobby you’d like to share with students at Stone-Robinson? We are looking for some fun activities and the “teachers” to lead them after school for our enrichment program. Scrapbooking, poetry, games, art, building with legos…the possibilities are endless. Please note that these are paid sessions, so you can have fun and make some good money at the same time! Please contact Angela Gurley at atamberr at peoplepc.com.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION, TUESDAY MARCH 25TH 9A-1P ; 3-6P
Please note that your child does NOT need to be present to register. You WILL need: birth certificate, two forms of proof of residency (1. deed, mortgage, rental agreement, etc; and 2) some kind of bill with the home address such as a utility bill or a pay stub. Your child must be 5 years old by September 30th, 2008. For more information, please visit the county website at www.k12albemarle.org and click on the link on the home

SPRING FESTIVAL and SILENT AUCTION APRIL 25th 5:30-8P
This year our theme is “OUR WORLD, OUR FUTURE”
Newsflash: since so many in our community are facing financial hardships right now, we’ve lowered the price for our Spring Festival to $5.00!!! We hope that will help more families be able to attend the festival, or have a little more fun money for the auction. We’re still going to have the moonbounces, the dunk tank, magic show, face-painting, tattoos, new and exciting games, and FABULOUS items up for raffle and auction. Stay tuned….and as always, if you have a service (painting, massage, free tax preparation, etc), or an item that you’d like to donate to the auction, please contact Tara Mincer at Taramincer at aol.com .
