PBS FRONTLINE that investigates the risks, realities and misconceptions
of teenage self-expression on the Web: FRONTLINE will airs "Growing Up
Online" Tues., Jan. 22 on PBS. Check out our preview site:

The program focuses on teens and their parents and teachers, who often
find themselves on opposite sides of a new digital divide, with sections
on cyber bullying, instant "Internet fame," and specter of online sexual
predators. I really appreciated all of your advise on different groups
interested in kids and the Internet. I did receive several calls from
several people interested in the program.
"Growing Up Online" includes experts and researchers including Ann
Collier of Net Family News, as well as danah boyd at the Berkman
Center, C.J. Pascoe at Berkeley's Digital Youth Project and Parry Aftab
at Wired Safety.
Among several topics, "Growing Up Online," highlights teachers and
parents who are trying to figure out how to reach this new cyber-savvy
generation. One teacher notes: "Kids live in such a media rich
environment that walking into classrooms without media must be like
walking into a desert. We can't possibly expect the learner of today to
be engrossed by someone who speaks in a monotone voice with a piece of
chalk in their hand."
Smiles~

PTO MEETING/PAJAMA NIGHT TUESDAY, JANUARY 22nd
Come to the next PTO meeting in your jammies! Tuesday, January 22nd at
7 P.M.
Come in your fuzzy slippers, your comfy jammies and listen to bedtime
stories with milk and cookies....all while learning what's happening
with the PTO, the school budget and upcoming events. Don't miss a
chance to see YOUR principal in her PJs! This is sure to be a night to
remember!
THE SRE TALENT SHOW FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd
AUDITIONS WILL BE FRIDAY, JANUARY 25th
You should see a registration/information flyer coming home Friday via
backpack mail and the Oak Leaf will also have the details. Don't let
the auditions scare you away! We're not expecting a perfected routine
whatsoever. We're just trying to get an idea of what kinds of acts
we're going to have, how many there will be, and to make sure it's
appropriate for an elementary talent show. If you have any questions,
contact either Cathy Clemons at CandBClemons at aol.com
<mailto:CandBClemons at aol.com> , or Sasha Noble at Snoble20268 at msn.com
<mailto:Snoble20268 at msn.com> .
SKATE NIGHT RETURNS Jan. 25th! 6:30 P.M.-8:30 P.M. in the gym
Bring your skates and roll to some great music with your friends and
family. The cost is $1 per skater, and .50cents to rent a pair of
skates (though inventory is VERY limited). Refreshments will also be
available. Please note that all skaters are required to wear a helmet.
If you have extra, outgrown skates at home, we'd love to add them to our
inventory!....and who knows, you might start seeing air guitar contests
or lip synching contests at these events!
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART IS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH 2:30 - 4:30
The SRE annual event this year is being held on Thursday, February 14th
in the gym from 2:30-4:30. This is for 3rd-5th graders only because we
have so many jumpers each year that we can only handle half the school
and the older children have more endurance and stronger jumping skills.
Those who are not familiar with the event should know that this is a
fund raiser for the American Heart Association. It promotes teamwork,
cooperation, fitness and raises awareness of health and the benefits of
exercise,...not to mention it's just lots of fun!
Your child will be coming home with more information regarding this big
event, but please know that we could use some volunteers to help donate
snacks, prepare the food and deliver it to the kids (who can't stop
jumping)..we offer fruit and drinks to keep their energy up. If you'd
like to help out, you can just send in the bottom of the flyer that
should be coming home shortly. Or, you can call 296-3754 ext 160 and
talk to Mrs. Reardon. They'll be sure to put you to good use!
