THE BUDGET: WE NEED YOUR VOICE TO BE HEARD
As you will be reading in Mrs. Kindler’s letter to the families in this month’s Oak Leaf, our educational community is in a serious financial crisis. It can sound very complicated and overwhelming and it’s very easy to stay out of it and just read the headlines in the Daily Progress. The reality is that your voice CAN be heard and we CAN do our part to ensure our children continue to get a high quality education from highly qualified teachers. Here is the easiest thing to do: copy and paste the simple sentence below into another email and send it to: schoolboard at k12albemarle.org
COPY: I would like to see the School Board submit a needs-based budget to the Board of Supervisors. Doing so is our best way to preserve the quality education our children and our community deserves.
Feedback on 2008-09 School Calendar By Monday
Don’t like having only have one snow day built into the school calendar? Think we should have an extra day or two after New Years Day before coming back to school? Don’t like 3 day weekends all in a row? Then you need to give your feedback on the proposed calendar for next year! Feedback is accepted on the proposed 2008-09 school calendar only through next Monday. You can access this calendar and answers to frequently asked questions on the Albemarle Co. Public Schools web site (k12albemarle.org) Look for the "2008-09 Calendar and Survey" to view the calendar and make comments to Diane Behrens, Executive Dir. of Support Services. Your input counts!
THE SRE TALENT SHOW FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd 6:30
WOW! What a huge turn out we had for the talent show! About 40 acts auditioned and showed us some amazing talent and creativity. Don’t miss the talent show coming Feb. 22nd at 6:30 P.M – it’s going to be a GREAT night! We will need volunteers to help that evening with checking students in, managing the flow of acts onto the stage, etc. Contact either Cathy Clemons at CandBClemons at aol.com, or Sasha Noble at Snoble20268 at com if you can help out.
SPECIAL EDITION SKATE NIGHT FEB. 15th 6:30 P.M. in the gym
Skate night might prove to be a little brighter on Feb. 15th by a few song and dance routines. Because there were so many students who wanted to sing and/or dance songs from High School Musical or Hannah Montana, we gave them the option to perform at the next Skate Night. So bring your skates and your friends and enjoy a great night of music too! Please note that all skaters are required to wear a helmet. If you have extra, outgrown skates at home, we’d love to add them to our inventory!
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART IS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH 2:30 – 4:30
This is for 3rd-5th graders only because we have so many jumpers each year that we can only handle half the school and the older children have more endurance and stronger jumping skills. Please know that we could use some volunteers to help donate snacks, prepare the food and deliver it to the kids (who can’t stop jumping)..we offer fruit and drinks to keep their energy up. If you’d like to help out, you can call 296-3754 ext 160 and talk to Mrs. Reardon. They’ll be sure to put you to good use!
SPRING FESTIVAL AND SILENT AUCTION MEETINGS FRI. FEB 8TH 10:30
The Spring Festival meeting will be in the large conference room and the Silent Auction meeting will be in the 2nd grade conference room. If you’d like to be involved but can’t make the meeting, contact Jennifer McGlothlin (rjbpmm at comcast.net) or Sasha Noble (snoble20268 at msn.com) for the spring festival and Tara Mincer (Taramincer at aol.com) for the silent auction.
TESTING DATES:
2nd Grade CoGAT: Feb. 19, 20, 21
5th Grade Writing: March 4th, 6th
Both of these tests will be given in the morning. Please avoid scheduling any appointments that would result in your child being absent for these assessments. Rescheduling testing is very difficult. Thank you for your help.
BURLEY EXPO NIGHT IS FEB. 20th
February 20th is Burley Expo Night, and it is a great opportunity to check out your child’s middle school and see its students and teachers in action. Not to mention, you can have a family dinner (spaghetti) without having to cook! There will be a silent auction, information booths, a bake sale, entertainment and more.
USBORNE BOOK FAIR COORDINATOR NEEDED
Last February, we had a very successful book fair with Usborne Books, and we’d like to do it again this year, but we need someone to head it up. Their representative, Jessica Russo, is very capable and helpful…which means it is not a difficult undertaking. We can also put you in touch with Missy Cruz, who ran it last year, and would be able to offer great guidance as well. You can contact Jessica Russo with questions at jessicarusso at myubah.com or 434-823-5282. Please let Tara Mincer (TaraMincer at aol.com) know if you’d be interested in helping out with this great event.
