On Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12, the Oprah Winfrey Show
will turn the focus of its estimated 49 million U.S. viewers to the
dropout crisis in America's high schools. Also this week, TIME
magazine's April 17, 2006 cover story, "Dropout Nation," provides an
in-depth look at the nationwide dropout crisis and the repercussions
that accompany it. The article is available online at

American high schools and the cost to America, as well as updated state
and local information on high schools, including graduation rates,
college readiness rates, and student achievement data. We also feature
the results from our nationwide survey about Americans' attitudes about
high school reform, videos on student attitudes about high school and
literacy, and several reports that address the crisis in high schools
and offer policy solutions.

The complete media alert follows:

Demand for Change Grows Nationally for Better High Schools
"Oprah" to Report on American Schools in Crisis on Tuesday, April 11 and
Wednesday, April 12Washington, D.C. - America is facing a crisis: Too
many young people do not graduate from high school. Too many students
graduate unprepared for college and work.

According to Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education
and former governor of West Virginia, "The American high school is not
providing the solid foundation young Americans must have in order to
keep this country strong and competitive. For too long, we have given up
on our older students, and this must change. We need to challenge each
one of them with rigorous coursework, make sure that they are all
prepared with adequate literacy skills, and work with them and their
parents to devise an individual graduation plan designed to get them to
the finish line set up for success." Governor Wise is available to
comment on America's dropout crisis and to provide further information
on national policies that can help all students graduate prepared for
success in life.

"The Oprah Winfrey Show" has an exclusive joint TV interview with Bill
and Melinda Gates, founders and co-chairs of the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation. The foundation has invested more than one billion dollars to
support the creation of more than 1600 high-quality high schools. This
week, a new national campaign will be announced to build awareness and
support for improvements in high schools so all students can graduate
prepared for success.
