FAX TO: Local Media
FROM: Albemarle County Police Department

Charlottesville, Virginia 22902
Phone: 434-296-5807, Fax: 434-972-4061
Albemarle County police have charged three local juveniles in connection
with an alleged plan for violent acts on two Albemarle County high
school campuses. Albemarle County Public Schools cooperated closely to
allow the initial investigation to move with speed and to properly
address the safety of students and staff.
The juveniles arrested include a 16-year-old Western Albemarle High
School student, a 15-year-old Albemarle High School student, and a
13-year-old Jack Jouett Middle School student. All three juveniles are
currently in custody at the Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center. Since
they are all juveniles, their names will not be released.
The Police Department obtained information from a confidential source
earlier this week about possible violence that might have taken place in
several months at both Albemarle and Western Albemarle High Schools.
County police have executed three search warrants. As of today, the
following charges have been placed:
The 16 year old WAHS student has been charged with two felonies:
1) Communicate a threat in writing, electronically transmitted
communication producing a visual or
electronic message, a threat to kill or do bodily injury to a person.
2) Command, entreat, or otherwise persuade another to commit a
felony.
The 15 year old AHS student has also been charged with two felonies:
1) Conspire, confederate, or combine with another to commit a
felony, to wit: murder
2) Conspire, confederate, or combine with another to commit a
felony, to wit: by use of any explosive device, destroy, in whole or in
part, a schoolhouse.
The 13 year old Jack Jouett Middle School student has been charged with:
1) Conspire, confederate, or combine with another to commit a
felony, to wit: murder
2) Conspire, confederate, or combine with another to commit a
felony, to wit: by use of any explosive device, destroy, in whole or in
part, a schoolhouse.
The school division's discipline actions will run parallel to the
criminal proceedings.
Over the past several days, the police department has increased its
presence in the schools by having additional officers on campus and
through frequent patrols. Albemarle, Western Albemarle, and Jouett will
send letters home to parents through the U.S. Mail to provide limited
facts included in this news release and to inform parents of existing
school safety plans and procedures. School staff also are maintaining a
high level of vigilance in supervising students. The information the
Police Department and School Division can share is limited because the
investigation is ongoing and involves juveniles.
Since this case is now pending in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations
Court, the Police Department and School Division will not be able to
answer any questions with regard to evidence, statements, etc. Any
further information regarding this case will be dealt with by the
Commonwealth Attorney's Office at the appropriate time.
Any person with information about this situation should contact
Detective Gary Pistulka at 296-5807.
