Historic Preservation Month Program to Focus Rosenwald Schools - May 18
<http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif>
Between 1917 and 1932, African-American communities across the
segregated South partnered with the Tuskegee Institute led by Booker T.
Washington, Chicago philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, local citizens, and
county school boards to build one- and two-teacher schoolhouses in order
to improve educational facilities and opportunities for their children.
These structures came to be known as the "Rosenwald Schools."
Of the more than 350 built in Virginia, seven were constructed in
Albemarle County between 1921 and 1926. On May 18th at 7:00 p.m.,
Albemarle County's Historic Preservation Committee will host a program
at Burley Middle School to discuss the history and status of the
county's Rosenwald Schools and to recognize their important role in
American history.

EMS Week - May 14 - 20
<http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif>
May 14 - May 20 is National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. This
year, we celebrate National EMS Week by honoring the dedication of our
EMS providers who make available the day-to-day lifesaving services of
emergency medicine. The brave men and women who serve as EMS providers
are often first on the scene of a disaster, a motor vehicle crash, a
house fire, or other event-making them our community's front line
response.
