Summary of the SMS PTO¹s year-to-date financial activities

We conducted two fundraisers to support the PTO¹s ability to support
Sutherland Middle School:

* The PTO received $16,479.50 (net income) from the magazine and small item
fundraiser (September). While this was complicated by "bounced check"
charges and undelivered items, we believe that at this point most orders
were satisfied.

* The UVA Women's basketball fundraiser $400.

The PTO funded the following items with our two fundraisers:

* Carnival and Field Day received $3,800 in support from the PTO. Since the
Carnival was a school event, the PTO did not receive any of the income from
the ticket sales or concessions. The PTO was happy to help support these two
popular student events.

* The PTO provides EVERY teacher with a monetary gift at the beginning of
the year to supply their classrooms with disposable items. Additionally, the
PTO provides funding to every Core department (Math, Science, Language Arts,
and Social Studies) and to the other departments. The PTO received requests
from 12 teachers and 13 departments totaling $6109.98.

* A $250 scholarship fund is available every year to support
school-sponsored educational events for students in need. The fund this year
was to support 6th grade field trips since money was already held from last
year¹s cancelled field trips for the 7th and 8th grades. To date no money
has been requested.

* $500 in scholarship money for summer school students is provided to the
school from the PTO. Half of this money was allocated to a mentoring dinner
and for students attending a strings field trip.

* New this year - the PTO supported publishing the SMS-2005-2006 yearbook.
This yearbook would not have been possible without the donation of time by
our Yearbook chairperson and parent photographers.

* The PTO sponsored a free 8th grade graduation social. The theme, ³Bright
Lights Big City², should be a great memorable moment for all our graduating
8th graders.

* $1500 was provided by the PTO to support small, end-of-the-year
appreciation gifts for the teachers and students.

* PTO provided $250 for pizza for the teachers during conference evening.
Our SMS parents donated desserts.

The support that the SMS community receives from our parents, students, and
staff is remarkable. We hope to continue these traditions and receive
nominations for officers to our PTO Board in the near future.

Thanks,
