Subject: Sutherland Matters Make a Difference Day announcement

Parents and students, Sutherland welcomes your support for Make a
Difference Day with clothing/book donations through October 28th!

Each year, Sutherland Middle School in conjunction with all Albemarle
County Schools, participates in Make a Difference Day. With great
support from the SCA, Sutherland's 2006 efforts include the following:

*a clothing drive for AMVETS (see below for information from the AMVETS
website) - please bring new or gently used clothing for all ages to
Sutherland any time over the next 2 weeks. "Think pink" - AMVETS
provides teachers with plenty of pink bags in which to put the clothing
and will pick up donated items on Saturday, October 28th. Donated items
will then be distributed to Virginia veterans and their families.

*a book drive for the annual Kids Lift Foundation Books for Kids program
(see below for information from the Books for Kids program) - please
bring new or gently used books for all ages (except for textbooks) to
Sutherland through October 28th. Each classroom will have a Book Drive
box in which to donate the books. Sutherland donated over 3000 books
for the 2005 drive, which accounts for over 1/3 of all books donated.
Let's do it again!

ABOUT AMVETS (quote taken from the website):

For more than 60 years, we in AMVETS have taken to heart the credo of
service set forth by our organization's founding fathers. In so doing,
we endeavor to provide our fellow veterans with the type of support they
truly deserve. This outreach effort takes many forms, from the
professional advice our service officers offer on earned veterans
benefits to our legislative efforts on Capitol Hill to the work done by
our hospital volunteers. Other AMVETS members involve themselves in a
range of initiatives aimed at contributing to the quality of life in
their local communities.

These two areas-veterans service and community service-drive the
commitment we have to make a difference in the lives of others.

 ABOUT BOOKS FOR KIDS:

 http://avenue.org/kids/books.htm

We strongly believe children are more likely to value reading and have
the desire to read when they have books of their very own to read and
take care of. It is our mission to see that the children we serve have
books they are proud to own. We would like to see that far more of the
children in our area have books in their homes. Books Lift Kids is now
in its seventh year. Books are collected at drop off spots at various
times during the year, with a main drive in the Fall and are distributed
in conjunction with Toy Lift.

Thank you to all those who donated, sponsored, and volunteered with
Books Lift Kids 2005. We collected 7,300 books last year!

Thanks and please contact Leslie Fendley (school counselor), Rachel
Benham (8th grade teacher/Book Drive coordinator), or Leslie Desimini
(6th grade teacher/SCA coordinator) with questions at975-0599.
