There were 3 cases of chicken pox at SMS last week. It is unknown if
any of these children had the chicken pox
vaccine. The incubation period for chicken pox is commonly 14-16 days.
It is contagious as long as 5 but usually 1-2 days before onset of rash,
and continuing until all lesions are crusted (usually about 5 days). It
is especially infectious during the early period. Susceptible
individuals should be considered infectious 10-21 days following
exposure. Infection usually confers long immunity; second attacks are
rare. Transmission is from person to person by direct contact, droplet
or airborne via respiratory tract or fluid from the vesicles (rash). It
is transmitted indirectly from articles freshly soiled by discharge from
the vesicles (rash) and mucous membranes of infected people. Scabs from
the vesicles are not infective. The very young and those who are
immunosuppressed may have the most difficulty. If you have concerns,
please contact the school nurse or your doctor.
