We received this notification about Tdap shot requirements and
exemptions for 6th graders today. There is a new requirement that a
doctor's note is needed for the age exemption. Please see below:

This e-mail provides further guidance regarding medical exemptions for
students beginning the sixth grade without having received the Tdap
vaccination.

Based on guidance from the Virginia Department of Health, appropriate
medical exemptions include the delay of inoculation until a child is
eleven years old, based on the physician's recommendation.

Specifically, the health department states:

A physician may provide a temporary medical exemption for students who
will not be 11 years of age at sixth-grade entry. However, Tdap should
be administered to these students as soon as possible following the
eleventh birthday.

Therefore, if a physician writes such a medical exemption for a student
who has not reached his or her eleventh birthday, the school should
honor it and admit the student into sixth grade.

We have communicated to you previously that a student must have the Tdap
booster before entering sixth grade unless he or she has received a
tetanus-containing vaccine within the past five years, or a medical or
religious exemption. There is no grace period for compliance with this
requirement. Unless the student meets one of the above criteria, he or
she must have had the shot before attending school.

Please contact us at 975-0599 if you have questions. Thanks! Dave
Rogers
