[SutherlandMatters] Locker Decoration Update

Dear Sutherland Families,

We have lots of students who like to decorate friends' lockers for their
birthdays. I think this is a really nice way to celebrate with a
friend. We have been allowing students to do this either after school
the day before or before school the day of a friend's birthday.
Recently, however, we have had difficulty with students coming in to
decorate, but not checking in with the office and being joined by
students who are here early and who "join up" with the decorators though
they are only visiting. This can cause a fair amount of disruption.

In response to this growing issue, I have developed a new policy toward
decorating lockers. I have announced this to our students and now I am
asking for your support as well. Here is the policy:

1.	Students are asked to come after school the day before the
birthday of their friend in order to decorate that person's locker.
2.	Only students who are involved in decorating should stay after.
We ask that students limit the number of decorators so they can all
actually be a part of the decorating.
3.	Students planning to decorate a locker are make arrangements
ahead of time with a teacher to check in with at the end of the day and
before leaving school when they are done.

These simple rules can help us out of our management woes, while
allowing students to go on enjoying celebrating their friends' birthdays
in this fun way. I appreciate your support in carrying out this plan!

It was recently pointed out to me that some children would not be able
to come in the afternoons, thus would not be able to participate in
decorating for a friend. Please know that if this is the case with your
child, I would ask that you call me or Ms. Orrock so we can work out
details with you. We do not want to eliminate locker decorating, but
are looking for a better way to manage it without disrupting the
numerous professional meetings that take place before school.

Sincerely,

Dave Rogers
