Dear 8th grade families,
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week (November 13 - 15), all 8th graders will take the New Standards Reference Exam. This is a standardized test of math skills and understanding that is designed to measure students' achievement in computation, applying those skills in simple problems, and solving and explaining their approach in solving complex word problems. The test is given on three separate days and focuses on one of the above elements each day. If your children were enrolled in Albemarle County Public Schools in the 4th grade, they would have taken an elementary version of this test that year.
We expect to receive the results in January or February and will send them to you as soon as they are available. You will then see an analysis of how your child performed compared to other students in Albemarle County and how we compared with a national sample. We analyze the overall results to determine the strengths and areas for improvement in our math instruction. Student performance on this test is for information and does not have any impact on report card grades. I will offer an evening meeting to answer questions and give an overview of our results shortly after scores are returned.
Please be aware that we will be giving the test beginning 9:15 each day (November 13 - 15) and it is most helpful if all students are in school on time. We will conduct make-up tests during the week to accommodate unavoidable absences. Your children do not need to prepare for the tests in any way. You can support their doing their best by making sure they get a good night's rest each night before the test and by making sure they have a good breakfast each morning of the test.
Sincerely,
Dave Rogers
Principal
