Help Needed!!!

          Volunteers are needed to be at the Sutherland Book Fair table at Barnes & Noble from 9am to 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 1 - 3.  Do you have two hours you could spare?  It's super easy!  When someone asks what we're doing, just explain they can help raise funds for our school enhancements by saying "I'm with the book fair" when they check out.  Sutherland gets a percentage of that sale.  There is no cost to the customer whatsoever...even café purchases count!  Consider doing a shift with your Sutherland student.  Great community service for them...company for you.

Delaney, Joseph.  REVENGE OF THE WITCH.  Young Tom, the seventh son of a seventh son, starts work as an apprentice for the village spook, whose job is to protect ordinary folk from "ghouls, boggarts and all manner of wicked beasties."

Gallego Garcia, Laura.  THE LEGEND OF THE WANDERING KING.  Walid ibn Huyr, a prince of ancient Arabia, embarks on a journey to take responsibility for his actions that have resulted in tragedy.

SC Horse.  HORSE TALES.  This book is a collection of stories about horses.

Kurzweil, Allen.  LEON AND THE SPITTING IMAGE.  Can Leon survive a school year with the unusual Miss Hagmeyer and her sewing projects?

Macdonald, Amy.  NO MORE NICE.  Simon enjoys staying with his unconventional great-aunt and great-uncle.  Flip the book for a second story, NO MORE NASTY, in which Aunt Mattie is Simon's substitute teacher and turns his classroom upside down.

SC Sports.  SPORTS SHORTS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT STORIES.  Eight authors write about their experiences playing sports while growing up.

Armstrong, Jennifer.  SHIPWRECK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD.  The true story of explorer Ernest Shackleton, who with his crew was stranded in the Antarctic Ice pack in 1915 with no ship and no way to contact the outside world.

Barron, T.A.  THE LOST YEARS OF MERLIN.  The young wizard Merlin, with no identity of his own and powers he is trying to hide, travels to a mystical island to find his origins.  This is the first book in a series.

Bartoletti, Susan Campbell.  HITLER YOUTH: GROWING UP IN HITLER'S SHADOW.  The story of teens in Germany who devoted their lives to supporting Adolf Hitler and his beliefs, and those who resisted the Nazi movement.

Cabot, Meg.  ALL-AMERICAN GIRL.  A teenage girl finds her life has changed when she successfully stops an assassination attempt on the President and becomes a hero overnight.

Clements, Andrew.  THINGS NOT SEEN.  One morning Bobby wakes up and gets ready for school, only to discover that he has turned invisible.

Curtis, Christopher Paul.  THE WATSONS GO TO BIRMINGHAM - 1963.  The Watsons leave their Michigan home to visit Grandma in Alabama in the summer of 1963, where they witness the tragic results of a Civil Rights clash.

Horowitz, Anthony.  STORMBREAKER.  After the death of his uncle, 14 year old Alex inherits the chance to continue his uncle's spy work for the MI6, the British intelligence agency.  This is the first title in a series.

Jiang, Ji-Li.  RED SCARF GIRL: A MEMOIR OF THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION.  The author's experiences as a teen during the Cultural Revolution in China, when she was forced to choose between loyalty to her family or to the ideals of the new government.

Johnson, Angela.  TONING THE SWEEP.  When Emmie learns that her grandmother has cancer, she takes action to capture the stories and events that have shaped her family.

Oppel, Kenneth.  AIRBORN.  After rescuing a dying balloonist, a cabin boy aboard an airship joins the balloonist's granddaughter in her mission to track down the mysterious winged creatures described in her grandfather's diary.

Osa, Nancy.  CUBA 15.  Preparation for Violet's quinceanera gives her more incentive to explore her Cuban heritage, but members of her family are reluctant to share some aspects of it.

Paulsen, Gary.  MR. TUCKET.  Francis Tucket is on a wagon train to Oregon in 1848 when he is captured by Indians and then taught how to live in the wild by a one-armed trapper.  This is the first in a series.

Whelan, Gloria.  HOMELESS BIRD.  Koly, at 13, is entering into an arranged marriage, according to Indian tradition.  But what lies ahead for her when she becomes a widow soon afterwards?

Wisler, G. Clifton.  RED CAP.  In 1862, 13 year old Ransom J. Powell joins the Union Army as a drummer boy and survives the horrors of Andersonville Prison.

Rising 8th & 9th Graders:

Abelove, Joan.  GO AND COME BACK.  Villagers in a small Peruvian community are shocked at the "uncivilized" customs of two visiting American anthropologists, but the visitors' interactions with teenager Alicia lead to discussions about very different viewpoints regarding life and death, gender issues and sexuality.

Anderson, Laurie Halse.  SPEAK.  When Melinda is socially ostracized after calling the cops on an end-of-summer party, she retreats inito her own mind, refusing to speak.  However, the memory of the guy who raped  her at the party cuts into her silence.

Bauer, Joan.  RULES OF THE ROAD.  Whiz-bang shoe seller Jenna gets the chance to drive her boss across the country in a white Cadillac, enjoying adventure and learning how to handle what life throws her way.

 Bloor, Edward.  TANGERINE.  Paul is making his mark on the soccer team at his new school, while seeking the truth behind the childhood incident that left him nearly blind.

 Bosse, Malcolm.  THE EXAMINATION.  Two brothers in 16th century China undertake a 3000-mile journey to Beijing where one will take important exams for his future, facing dangers such as pirates and kidnapping along the way.

Curtis, Christopher Paul.  BUCKING THE SARGE.  Despite being drawn into the shady business dealings surrounding his mom's slum empire, Luther dreams of college and a different future, searching for a plan to pursue his own goals.

Draper, Sharon.  TEARS OF A TIGER.  Andy is unable to overcome the guilt and grief he feels when a good friend is killed in a car accident while Andy is driving.

Farmer, Nancy.  THE HOUSE OF THE SCORPION.  Matt, a favored clone of a drug lord who rules over an opium empire and has lived for 140 years through transplants from his clones, struggles to change his fate and ultimately correct the wrongs done in the past.

Freymann-Weyr, Garret.  MY HEARTBEAT.  Ellen idolizes her older brother Link and his best friend James, but as she tries to understand their close friendship, she finds her own relationship changing with each of them.

Grimes, Nikki.  BRONX MASQUERADE.  A group of students share their poetry, rap and art in class every Friday, discovering new information about their classmates and making unexpected connections with each other.

Hautman, Pete.  HOLE IN THE SKY.  In the year 2038. a deadly virus has wiped out most of the world's people, and several teenagers struggle to keep a cultish group immune to the disease from spreading it further.

Lubar, David.  SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE.  Facing the uncertainties of his first year of high school along with the upcoming arrival of a new baby brother, Scott writes a humorous "how to" high school survival manual for his sibling-to-be.

Myers, Walter Dean.  SLAM.  Harlem teenager Slam has basketball skills that keep him in total control on the court, but in real life, he's struggling with grades, his plans for the future, and his best friend's decisions that are driving them apart.

Pfetzer, Mark.  WITHIN REACH: MY EVEREST STORY.  The teenage author's experiences as a mountain climber, including his Everest attempt.

Trueman, Terry.  NO RIGHT TURN.  Jordan has struggled to cope in the years since his father's suicide, until access to the vintage Corvette owned by his mother's new boyfriend brings forth possibilities - and risks - for him.

Wolff, Virginia Euwer.  MAKE LEMONADE.  When LaVaughn takes a job babysitting for a single mother, she becomes the one person the family can depend on for care, support and friendship.  The story continues in TRUE BELIEVER.

Napoli, Donna Jo.  SIRENA.  A mermaid who is one of the mythical sirens is granted immortality from the gods when she rescues a human man and they fall in love, but they struggle with issues of his mortality when he is called to defend Greece during the Trojan War.

Gies, Miep.  ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED: THE STORY OF THE WOMAN WHO HELPED TO HIDE THE FRANK FAMILY.  The autobiography of the woman who brought supplies and news to Anne Frank and her family while they hid from the Nazis in Holland during World War II.

Westerfeld, Scott.  UGLIES.  In Tally's world, everyone becomes pretty on their 16th birthday through an operation, but when she meets a group of renegades who challenge her beliefs about the operation, she faces a critical choice for her future.
