The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a young African-American string-band group that plays fiddle and banjo music from the foothills of the Carolinas. They perform syncopated dance-tunes and songs that are a rich aspect of early 20th century rural black communities. They have been featured on a Prairie Home Companion and in the recently released movie "The Great Debaters" directed by Denzel Washington. Rolling Stone magazine said, "The Carolina Chocolate Drops are three young black musicians revisiting, with a joyful vengeance, black string-band and jug-band music of the Twenties and Thirties. Dona Got a Ramblin' Mind is dazzling in its velocity and virtuosity."

Smithsonian Institution Exhibition Opens Friday
The Virginia Discovery Museum, in cooperation with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the Virginia Association of Museums, is proud to host the local exhibition of New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition. When you stop and listen, you quickly hear the music all around us--at a local festival, at a dance hall on a Saturday night or on your radio or your .mp3 player. Whether you're hearing blues, country western, folk, or gospel, American roots music reveals the American story--peoples reshaping themselves in a new and changing world. As Americans from a variety of heritages shared cultural influences, musicians found new ways to play unique sounds learned from new neighbors on traditional instruments. The inevitable intermingling of musical influences created exciting new sounds--new American music.
Through a selection of photographs, recordings, instruments, lyrics and artist profiles, New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music will explore the distinct cultural identities of American roots music forms. The Virginia Discovery Museum's presentation of this exhibit will be supplemented with an exciting variety of hands-on activities and instruments for children, including an old-time radio station. The whole family can enjoy great music!
New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music will be on display at the Virginia Discovery Museum through December 4.
