Junior Law Cadet Program
The annual Junior Law Cadet program is a week long summer training
program for high school students interested in careers in Law
Enforcement who have completed their junior year. Cadets experience a
life similar to a trooper-in-training, complete with daily room
inspections and training by state police instructors on Department
operations, tactical team operations, officer survival, undercover
operations, driver improvement, defensive tactics, observation of
Medivac operations, water safety training, firearms safety and
narcotics detection using police canines.
As part of their training, the cadets also undergo a variety of
physical agility exercises used in the Virginia State Police
applicant testing process.
“This is an excellent opportunity and practical experience for
students to learn first-hand what it’s like to be a State Police
trooper,” said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Superintendent of the
Virginia State Police. “The Junior Law Cadet program is one of the
best ways for our Department to make contact and build positive
relationships with Virginia’s youth, especially for those interested
in pursuing a career in law enforcement.”
The American Legion selects and sponsors the students to represent
the organization’s Virginia districts. The 20th American Legion/
Virginia State police Junior Law Cadet Program has been scheduled for
in June 14-19, 2009, at the Virginia State Police Academy in
Richmond. Applicants must have a driver's license or learners' permit.

AGCVA is proud to announce the Second Annual Rodeo Competition and
Construction Equipment and Products Show being held on Saturday, May

those in the industry can display and promote their products and
skills. Construction products and equipment will be on display, as
well as having representatives from professional companies that do
business with contractors.
The Rodeo competition includes backhoe, skidloader, excavator, and
mini-excavator competitions where operators can demonstrate their
skill (or lack thereof) in equipment safety, object placement,
obstacle course and more. Professionals and amateurs welcome! This
year there are two new events: a carpentry competition and masonry
demonstration.
Exhibitors will include: construction equipment dealers and
suppliers, specialty contractors, insurance, bonding companies,
etc... any firm that makes its living from the construction industry.
While the big kids run the heavy equipment, the little people can

be great. Or, just pick up a present and send it in. Cheryl Parks
will handle making the baskets and wrapping. All gift items need to
be delivered by May 1. These items can be marked "for Teacher
Appreciation" and left at the main office.

Community Forum on Gangs and Gang Activity
A free Community Forum on Gangs and Gang Activity will be held on
April 27th and 28th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Monticello
High School Forum. The presentation will raise public awareness
regarding gangs, share prevention strategies that schools have in
place, provide a list of community resources, and highlight how
parents and citizens can get involved in preventing gang activity in
our area. A short documentary filmed in Virginia will also be
presented. Representatives from the Virginia Attorney General's
office and members of the joint Albemarle-Charlottesville Gang
Initiative Team will be present to answer questions.
Gang violence is an ongoing serious problem, and states are working
with communities throughout the United States to stem the growing
violence amongst our youth. Many communities deny a local presence
of gang activity, as they consider it a 'larger city problem.'
However, gangs are moving their base of operations to smaller
communities and towns across the nation. Albemarle County and the
City of Charlottesville are not immune to gang activities, as
evidenced by recent violent attacks on innocent victims, and
increased graffiti on buildings, bridges and streets. In order for
communities to stem the growth and discourage gangs from building a
base of operation in their community, residents need to be aware of
the signs of gang activity in their neighborhood, their shopping
centers; schools, parks, highways, bridges and recreational areas and
be prepared to take action to stop it before it takes hold. Improving
awareness of gangs is one of the most important ways to stem activity
in a community and to reach parents of youth who may be at risk for
joining a gang.
The forum is sponsored by the Albemarle County Police Department, the
Albemarle Commonwealth's Attorney and Albemarle County Public
Schools. It is free and open to the public.
